Urban Planet Mobile, a mobile media company focused on creating content and solutions for the education and healthcare industries, has been acquired by Sibling Group (OTC:SIBE), an educational technology holding firm. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Tribune Publishing, parent of the Chicago Tribune, has agreed to acquire the suburban properties of Sun-Times Media, which includes 6 daily and 32 weekly newspapers, from Wrapports. Terms of the acquisition, and the printing and distribution deal, were not disclosed. Wrapports had acquired Sun-Times Media for $20 million in 2011, and will focus on financially strengthening the Chicago-Times Newspaper.

Joyent, provider of a cloud infrastructure and big data analytics solutions, has raised $15 million in Series E funding from LG Innovation Ventures, EPIC Ventures, El Dorado Ventures, Orascom TMT Investment, and Intel Capital. The company has raised $135 million in total funding. The company will use the new capital for expanding its presence in public and private service.

Weaved, a developer of Internet-of-Things networking, has raised $2.3 million in a round of financing led by Crunchfund with participation from Metamorphic, Core Ventures Group, TMT Investments, Alpine Meridian Ventures, Double M Partners, and Big Basin Partners. The company will use the funds for launching new Internet-of-Things products.

Continuent, a provider of database clustering and replication services, has been acquired by VMware(NYSE:VMW), a provider of virtualization infrastructure solutions. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Constituent will operate under VMware’s Hybrid Cloud Business Unit.



Slack Technologies, a provider of an enterprise collaboration platform, has raised $120 million in a round of funding led by Google Ventures and KPCB with participation from A16Z, Accel Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, and Social+Capital Partnership. The company has raised $180 million in total funding with the last round coming under 6 months ago. The new capital will be used for hiring a marketing staff and for expanding its user base. The company has recently been valued at $1.12 billion.

Netherlands-based Animana, a provider of a cloud-based practice information management solution for veterinarians, has been acquired by IDEXX Laboratories (NASDAQ:IDXX). Terms of the deal were not disclosed.  The acquisition augments IDEXX’s practice management software offerings, and continues expansion into international markets.

healthcare payors

Healthport, a provider of secure access to confidential medical information for healthcare organizations and insurance payors, has been acquired by private equity firm New Mountain Capital in an all cash transaction from Abry Partners. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.


Garnero Group Acquisition Company, a blank check company, has announced it will acquire a 70 percent stake in WISeKey, a provider of mobile security solutions and services. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.  GGAC will look to acquire 100 percent of the WISeKey after the initial acquisition has taken place.
