UK-based All3Media, an independent television, film, and digital production and distribution company, was acquired by Discovery Communications (Nasdaq:DISC.A) and Liberty Global (Nasdaq:LBTY.A), for $932 million at a valuation of 1.1x revenue and 8.5x EBITDA. The acquisition will expand All3Media’s reach in its existing markets.

Forcea, a provider of business intelligence applications and analytics, was acquired by IMS Health (NYSE:IMS), which offers information, services, and technology to the healthcare industry.  Forcea solutions will leverage IMS One, the company’s intelligent cloud-based platform. Terms were not disclosed.

Doculex, a developer and provider of document and content management software solutions, was acquired by docSTAR, which also provides document management software. The acquisition enables docSTAR software to organize medical records, invoices, and payroll information on an in-house server. Terms were not disclosed.

MediaSpan Group, a provider of digital content management, online marketing, Web publishing, and online promotional solutions for media companies, was acquired by Newscycle Solutions, a company offering software solutions to the news media industry.  Terms were not disclosed.

Canada-based Web and mobile-based classroom response platform, Top Hat Monocle has raised $10 million in Series B funding led by Georgian Partners, with participation from Emergence Capital Partners, iNovia Capital, SoftTech VC, Version One Ventures, Felicis Ventures, and Goldent Venture Partners. The company, which has now raised $18 million in funding, plans on using the new capital to further accelerate adoption of its teaching platform and extend its product leadership.

India-based Meshlabs Software, a company that develops text mining and social engagement solutions, was acquired by business processes automation and CRM software company Pegasystems (Nasdaq:PEGA). With the acquisition Pegasystems will unify MeshLabs’ social listening, text analytics, and natural language processing to enhance existing capabilities in its customer service, marketing, and case management solutions. Terms were not disclosed.

Appetas, a site where restaurants can build websites for themselves and integrate services such as GrubHub and Opentable to add extra features like delivery services and reservations, was acquired by Google (Nasdaq:GOOG).  Terms were not disclosed.

Marketplace for online courses Udemy, has raised $32 million in Series C funding led by Norwest Venture Partners, with participation from Insight Venture Partners and MHS Capital. The company, which has now raised $48 million, plans to use the new capital to broaden its content library, expand its international presence, and enhance its course creation and teaching platform, which includes tools to help instructors engage more deeply with current and future students.


Bulu Box, which provides an eCommerce platform for health, nutrition, and weight loss products, has raised $2 million in Series A funding led by Dundee Venture Capital, with participation from Midwest Venture Alliance, Mid-American Angels Investments, and Two Bridges Capital.


France-based La Fourchette, an online restaurant booking platform with a network of more than 12,000 restaurant partners across Europe, was acquired by online travel company TripAdvisor (NasdaqGS:TRIP). Prior to the acquisition, La Fourchette has raised $14.8 million over two rounds from Otium Capital, Partech Ventures, and Serena Capital.  Terms were not disclosed.


Investment platform Motif Investing, a platform that enables individuals to easily invest in ideas, has raised $35 million in Series D funding led by JPMorgan, Wicklow Capital, and Balderton Capital, with participation from Goldman Sachs, Foundation Capital, Ignition Partners, and Norwest Venture Partners. The round brings the company’s total funding to date to $86 million.


Brazil-based sporting goods eCommerce company Netshoes, has raised $180 million in funding led by GIC, with participation ICONIC Ventures, Kaszec Ventures, Tiger Global, and Temasek Holdings.

Japan-based social commerce company 10sec, which provides an online marketplace for Instagram users to post items for sale, has raised $1.6 million in seed funding from CyberAgent (TSE:4751).

Social and mobile application developer AppHome, was acquired by Israel-based mobile advertising company Appnext, for $2.5 million. Apphome’s technology will enable Appnext to create an open access API for its platform, and allow each of their partners to develop monetization tools around its app promotion engine.

Field Lens, a mobile and Web application that provides project management tools used in the construction industry, has raised $8 million in Series A funding led by OpenView Venture Partners, with participation from SoftBank Capital, Lerer Ventures, High Peaks Venture Partners, Contour Venture Partners, Borealis Ventures, and NYC Seed. The company has raised $12.2 million in funding to date.

Talenthouse, a talent crowdsourcing startup that aims to connect well-known artists with collaborators, has raised $10 million in funding led by Germany-based media company ProSiebenSat1. The company, which has raised $25.1 million in funding to date, plans on using the new capital to expand into Germany.

Hassle.com, which provides an online marketplace for home-cleaning services, has raised $6 million in Series A funding led by Accel Partners. The new funding will be used to expand the company into major cities in the U.S. and UK.

Mobile affiliate network Spendship, was acquired by Moontoast, which operates a social commerce platform for affinity brand retailers, musicians, athletes, celebrities, and authors. Moontoast’s acquisition will enable Spendship to help brands deepen fan engagement. Terms were not disclosed.

Marketing and public relations firm Culture Shop, was acquired by marketing services company Civic Entertainment Group. The company will merge its operations into CEG, with a plan to maintain Culture Shop as a specialty practice able to provide the agency’s clients access to research and analysis of the latest marketplace trends. Terms were not disclosed.

Television broadcasting company Gray Television (NYSE:GTN), has acquired three television stations KTVH-TV, KMTF-TV, and KBGF-TV, for $2 million.

magazine publishing

Magazine self-publishing platform Magcloud, was acquired by Blurb, a book publishing and marketing platform, from Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ). Blurb will integrate MagCloud technology and operations into Blurb over the next three months. Terms were not disclosed.

Outbox Systems, a provider of a cloud integration platform for the global enterprise market, has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Infinite Investments. With the new funding the company plans on hiring team members, expanding office space, and furthering the development of resources.

Andera, a provider of a Software as a Service solution that simplifies account opening and lending for banks and credit unions, was acquired for $44 million by Bottomline Technologies (Nasdaq:EPAY), a company offering cloud-based payment, invoice, and banking solutions to corporations, insurance companies, financial institutions, and banks worldwide. With the acquisition of Andera, the company extends its portfolio of payments and digital banking solutions.

Predictive project management solutions provider Liquidplanner, has raised $8 million in Series B funding led by TVC Capital. The company, which has now raised $11.6 million in funding, intends on using the new capital to expand sales and marketing initiatives and further invest in product development, engineering, and operations functions.

healthcare software

Flatiron Health, a developer of an oncology data platform, has raised $130 million in Series B funding led by Google Ventures, with participation from First Round Capital and LabCorp. This investment marks Google Ventures biggest investment in a healthcare startup. Flatiron Health plans to use the new capital to acquire Altos Solutions. The company had previously raised $8 million in Series A funding.

ScaleXtreme, a company that develops systems management products delivered as a cloud service, was acquired by Citrix (Nasdaq: CTXS). Terms were not disclosed. ScaleXtreme had raised VC funding from Accel Partners, RightVentures, and Ignition Partners.

Ionia, a provider of a system integrator specializing in connected solutions, was acquired by LogMeIn (Nasdaq:LOGM), a company offering cloud-based collaboration, IT management, and customer service offerings. Terms were not disclosed.
